Some Things About the Association

The Wadebridge Memory Café Association was formed in 2010 to ensure the sustainable future of the Wadebridge Memory Cafe.  The committee are all regularly involved in the provision of the Cafe.

The Cafe is the result of a partnership venture initiated and supported by the Rotary Club of Wadebridge.  The majority of the volunteers are Rotarians from the Club who have a strong commitment to enabling our Guests to live well with their memory difficulties.  In addition the Rotary Club has provided the main source of finance for the Cafe for the first three years of its existence from its launch in 2008.  The Club has been central to the creation of the Association and has ensured its current financial stability.

Another main partner in the success of the Cafe is Cornwall Care, who enable the consistent and highly valued contribution of a very skilled member of staff  who provides particular expertise in the support of Guests who are carers as well as playing a central part in the organising and running of the Cafe and the Association.

The Memory Cafe Guests in partnership with the Rotary Club were instrumental in supporting the local Primary Care Trust in applying for and setting up a National Demonstrator site in Peer Support of people living with dementia and continue to contribute to the success of this project which is part of the National Dementia Strategy implementation and which is being evaluated by academic institutions for the NHS.

The awarding of the "Magic of Rotary Project Award" to a Rotarian in the Wadebridge Club for the approach used in creating and running the Memory Cafe firmly placed the  Cafe, its Guests and volunteers on the map.  This was helped by the creation of a short DVD about the Cafe and its presentation at the 2010 RIBI (Rotary International Britain and Ireland) National Conference.  A link to the film is found on our links page.

Through an organisation of Rotarians known as REPoD (Rotarians Easing Problems of Dementia) the approach of active engagement in partnership with others used in the setting up and running of the Wadebridge Cafe has been shared with Rotary Clubs in the South West and further a field.

The Association is delighted to provide one of  the growing number of Memory Cafes in Cornwall and to contribute to their sustainability and the development of others through active involvement in the Cornwall "Memory Group Network" and "Memory Cafe Forum".
